Coffee machines are modern inventions. These machines are also known as coffee makers and they have become the most favorite appliances adorning many countertops and office snack trays or bars.
The first coffee machine was produced only in 1972. Since then, home electronics manufacturers have produced their own versions of coffee makers packed with lots of handy and useful features.
Like most appliances, a coffee machine needs regular cleaning to keep it in top condition. With constant use, accumulated granules and residues will clog the internal components of your machine. This will affect the quality of the brew produced by the coffee maker.
If you notice that your coffee maker can not produce a full pot and the brew is getting weaker, then your machine needs to be cleaned immediately.
Clean the Coffee Machine with Vinegar or Baking Soda
Vinegar and baking soda are the safest and most effective agents you can use for cleaning coffee machines. These are natural substances that will not damage the coffee maker and do not pose health hazards for you.
When cleaning the machine with vinegar, you should fill the water reservoir with one quart vinegar. You should also replace the water filter with a new one before you turn on the brewing cycle.
Place the carafe on the heating plate and power on the machine. You should allow the vinegar to drip completely. Then allow the vinegar to soak the carafe for at least thirty minutes. After this process, throw away the vinegar and rinse the carafe thoroughly.
Fill the water reservoir with tap water and turn on the machine after placing the carafe on the hot plate. Allow the water to completely drip into the carafe then rinse the machine again. Before you use the coffee machine, make sure to replace the water filter with a new one.
The same process is applicable if you are going to use baking soda as a cleaning agent. Simply dissolve two tablespoons of baking soda in one quart water and use it as a replacement for the vinegar.
Observe the Performance of the Coffee Machine
After cleaning the coffee maker, it should be able to produce a full pot and the brew would be stronger now. However, if the coffee brew is still weak and the machine can not produce the right amount, then you may have to clean the coffee maker again. Repeat the process and observe the performance of your coffee maker.
If problems persist, you have to check the troubleshooting instructions provided by the manufacturer. Some models of coffee machines have troubleshooting manuals. You can also bring the machine to the nearest service center if it is still covered by the warranty.
In some cases, problematic coffee makers should be replaced by a new one. Remember that these machines are inexpensive. Sometimes, it would be best and more economical if you will just replace your old unit with a new one. The cost of repair could be more expensive than a brand new coffee maker.
